What a great question!

AM Architecture & Construction fully understand this question, over recent years it’s more reasonable to ask it than ever, and choosing an architect without any reference has turned, at best, in to a great confusion and, at worst, in to a frenzied game of “pito-pito-gorgorito” or “I’ll take the cheaper and may it be what God wants”.

We’ll overlook the previous phases and go to the next real situation directly, “Wow, I’ve realized that to do this I need an architect, I will ask Google”

Well, first of all we will try to explain something:

A great architect gives an excellent professional service with an exquisite personal treatment and he is who, along with you, makes decisions throughout the entire process of design and construction and, most important, saves you money.

In summary:

Their fees pay for themselves with the savings generated both in the work and long-term consumption and maintenance.

So watch out choosing the cheapest, and we have not the slightest intention to criticize the work of other colleagues, but to remind you, as you know, that respecting your home, cheap usually get expensive.

That said, let’s get to the point, because I’ll give the Holy Grail when it comes to choosing an architect… There it goes:

CHOOSING AN ARCHITECT IS NOT ABOUT FINDING MANY ARCHITECTS FEES BUT  TO DEFINE THE BEST AS POSSIBLE THE SERVICE YOU WANT TO RECEIVE.

This is the basis of everything, so if you leave this post with that idea, I would feel more than satisfied.

And I mean, if it is very clear from the beginning what you want and what are the tasks of each of the parties, later we will save all or many of the misunderstandings, stress or injustice feellings and all will participate in the project in a more active way.

Once this is known, I recommend that you follow this simple process, you probably have already thought about something similar, but I think it is good to share it with you because do not need more… so do not get confused!:

1. Make a list of 3 or 4 candidates.

No more, unless you want to go crazy, ideally choose one or two at most from each of these sources:

1.- Ask family and friends who previously worked with an architect and they were satisfied
2.- Seek information on the Internet, and choose one that you like and find trustworthy.
3.- Try to know who is the author of a work you like and locate him.

2. Contact the candidates.

Telephone and mail are usually available on the websites of Architects. So choose your preferred method of communication, and I would follow these steps:

1.- Describe to detail your project, be prepared in advance and this will save bad times and questions that remain unanswered.
2.- Ask for their availability and time to do it.
3.- Be very attentive to both positive and negative connotations that they convey, note it all mentally and keep that in mind because first of all we are talking about he and you are people, and you want to deal with someone positive, having desire and willingness to work, at very least… right?

3. Set a meeting and meet with 2 or 3 Architects.

The goal here is to confirm the work that needs to be done and how those people really are, his personality and his way of working. We recommend asking their portfolio, in order to know more about their style and whether this fits with ours and our needs.

And most important, explains well what you want, your available budget and ask him to define point by point what is the scope of their work because if you’re not satisfied with that or you need something else, this is one of the best times to say! (Though quiet, there will be more).

4. Day of Reflection

Once you have held meetings with several architects, know their proposed fees and have mixed all with the personality and emotions that they have transmitted you, it is time to make a decision.

It is important not to take much of it to not get into paralysis by analysis, ideally one or two days, really you do not need more because I assure you already have the information you need to choose in front of your eyes.

So … Make a decision and start with the project you are passionate about!

By the way! If you have any questions, i inform that i will answer every comment one by one 🙂
